About Ohm's Law and the Power Wheel

The Core of Electronics

Ohm's Law is the foundational mathematical relationship that governs all electrical circuits. It states that the current passing through a conductor between two points is directly proportional to the voltage across those two points.

The Four Variables

  • Voltage (V): Measured in Volts, this is the electrical "pressure" pushing the electrons through the circuit.
  • Current (I): Measured in Amperes (Amps), this is the actual flow rate of the electrons.
  • Resistance (R): Measured in Ohms (Ω), this is the restriction or friction opposing the flow of electrons.
  • Power (P): Measured in Watts (W), this is the rate at which electrical energy is transferred by the circuit (such as heat generated by a resistor or light from an LED).

How to Use This Tool

The "Power Wheel" combines Ohm's Law (V = I × R) and Joule's Law (P = V × I) into 12 algebraic variations. Because these four variables are mathematically locked together, you only ever need to know two of them to figure out the remaining two. Simply type your two known values into the calculator above, and it will instantly solve the rest while highlighting the exact formulas used to get the answer.
